The spent compost that the mushrooms were grown in is wonderful for lawns and gardens. The highly enriched compost that is needed for the mushrooms is a terrific soil amendment and fertilizer. Since mushrooms do not contain chlorophyll, they do not use the nutrients that plants that grow in sunlight do, leaving a material that lawns and gardens thrive on. Continental Mushroom Compost and has been used by National Capital region gardeners for years, is available commercially from our farm:

Compost FAQ
- How Do I Determine How Much Compost I Need?
To calculate the amount of compost you require for either your lawn or garden use the following calculation: Length X Width X Height divided by 27 = yards
For Example: If your lawn is 50 feet long by 40 feet wide, the calculation is 50 feet x 40 feet x 3 inches (or 0.25 feet) divided by 27 = 18.5 yards
Because height has to be a fraction of a foot to calculate yards, 3 inches will equal 0.25. For calculating yards, use the following table to convert inches into a fraction of a foot.
Inches (") Fraction of a Foot 1" 0.09 2" 0.17 3" 0.25 4" 0.34 5" 0.42 6" 0.50 - How Do I Add The Compost To My Lawn?
Some general guidelines from our customers: Before adding the compost to a lawn, make sure the lawn is cut first. Put approximately 1/2 inch to a full inch on top of your lawn and rake it into the grass. Rake away the excess (including lumps and bumps) and then water your lawn.
- How Do I Add The Compost To My Garden?
Some general guidelines from our customers: The amount of compost you will use varies on the soil condition of your garden. For soil that is poor condition, apply between 6 inches to 8 inches of compost. For soil that is in good condition, apply between 3 inches to 4 inches of compost.
Put the desired amount of compost on the garden area you are treating. Mix the compost into the soil in a 2:1 ratio (that is, 2 parts soil to 1 part compost).
